Very nice museum quality officer’s kepi from the state of New York.

The body of the kepi is in excellent condition. There is not a moth hole or nip on it. A double line of bullion tape circles the kepi approx. 1.00 inch from the base. This tape is also used to outline the disc and to form a quatrefoil at the disc center. The front, back and both sides are decorated with a 0.25 wide piece of this tape as well. The front of the kepi has an embroidered gold bullion wreath with a silver bullion thread “NY” at center. This insignia is very well done and flawlessly sewn to the front of the kepi. Attached above the letters “NY” is a white metal false embroidered number “9.” Side buttons are State of New York “Excelsior” buttons which anchor a false chinstrap made of bullion tape. The visor has a bound edge that is holding firmly in place and exhibits light to heavy crazing.

The interior has an “ox-blood” colored sweatband. It shows signs of use but it is completely intact. The body of the cap has a quilted lining of dark polished cotton. The lining has deteriorated on the sides and crown exposing cotton padding underneath and a sub lining of white cloth with a gray zigzag pattern. Stitched into the crown and still present is an oval maker’s label that reads “F. N. MATT / NO. 33 AVENUE A / BETWEEN 2ND & 3RD STREETS / NEW YORK.” Label is in excellent condition.

The 9th New York State Militia served during the Civil War as the 83rd New York Volunteers. The regiment saw action at Cedar Mountain, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.

There are several images found online that show officers of this regiment wearing these kepis.  [ad]
