1858 PATTERN FORAGE CAP WITH INFANTRY INSIGNIA

Item Code: 1117-131

Standard U.S. Army regulation forage cap adopted by the Quartermaster Department in late 1858. The cap in this new form was to replace the earlier pattern 1839 “Wheel Cap” used in the field by the U.S. Army as well as State Volunteer units during the Mexican war period and well into the 1850s. With the redevelopment of American military uniforms, weapons and equipment in the 1850s this cap became the norm for the field service throughout the Civil War and was not replaced with a new pattern until 1872.

This is the standard issue Model 1858 forage cap in lightly worn but good condition with brass infantry insignia on the crown.

The blue wool exterior shows scattered moth holes and tracks. Some holes have been closed with what looks like a drop of white glue. This does not detract from the appearance in any way.

Black leather visor is attached as is the thin leather chinstrap just above it. Chinstrap is complete with brass slider and side buttons.

Interior is complete with proper wide sweatband and brown polished cotton lining. Interior shows very little wear. A name “G.A. Clark” is written in ink on the crown lining in period ink. Unfortunately, there are too many G.A. Clarks in the CW database to narrow down the specific owner.

Stamped brass infantry insignia is attached by two wires and exhibits a mellow patina.

A complete Civil War forage cap with soldier’s name inside.   [jet]
