During the Civil War several Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York infantry regiments were known to have worn these shakos. Of French manufacture this shako has a molded leather body rising 5.00 inches in the front and 7.50 inches at the rear with a separately applied crown 5.00 inches in diameter. At the base is a 0.75 inch wide band of sewn tarred leather. Another is sewn at the top of the shako around the base of the crown. There are two tarred leather sewn bands forming a "V" on each side.
Mounted on the front is a die stamped brass plate with a laurel and oak leaf wreath surrounding an infantry horn mounted on a dark blue painted panel surmounted by a spread-winged American eagle having a painted American shield. Behind that and mounted at the top of the shako is a red, white, and blue painted tin rosette. There is a somewhat faded blue and yellow wool pom-pom attached.
The interior is without a cloth lining having several adjusting straps and a wide leather sweatband measuring 3.50 inches wide. The visor is made of patent leather with the underside painted green with an embossed "G". The body of the shako is in good condition with one or two shallow dents in the back but nothing major.
