This stiff military shako was manufactured by G. W. SIMMONS & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts and is so marked on the paper label pasted into the crown. The body of the shako is covered with a gray wool material with a black leather disc at top and a strip of black leather around the base. At front and center is a stamped brass device of a musician’s lyre with a plain shield at center surrounded by a laurel wreath and topped by an open music book. The visor has a sewn and bound edge and is very thick. The surface of the visor has moderate crazing. The single side button has the Infantry hunting horn device, the other button is missing. The chinstrap is made of a thin piece of leather with a keeper and adjustment buckle. The interior has a wide black sweatband in very good condition and the crown, as mentioned above, has a paper label. The label is worn around the edges but is still readable.

The shako is in overall good condition with some areas of moth damage and moth tracking on the gray wool material covering the body.
