ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S MAROON SASH

$500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-215

This is an original Civil War officer’s sash in very fine condition.

Worn by officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over the sash.

This specimen still exhibits a rich, vibrant maroon color and is approximately 2 ½” wide and 17 ½’ (yes, feet, not inches) long including the tassels at the ends. The tassels are 9 ½” long themselves. The tassels exhibit some minor pulling and wear.  This sash was constructed by folding the material and sewing the central inside seam. In places the folded edge has wear and has period sewn repairs.

Civil War sashes are becoming difficult to find. This is a very good specimen.   [jet]
