CIVIL WAR MASSACHUSETTS CAPTAIN’S FROCK COAT

$4,000.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 287-56

This frock coat is in very good condition for its age. The color of the exterior is very strong with no signs of fading. It has the proper sleeves with plenty of room at the elbow and a low stand-up collar. There are nine buttons down the front and three on each cuff. There are also six on the back, two at the waist and four on the skirt. There is some light moth tracking on each side of the chest with one or two small, well done repairs. These are not readily visible from a distance. The only visible moth hole is on the back of the skirt. On the underside of the button edge there are a few holes between the 3rd and 4th button but these are not visible unless you are examining the inside.

The lining is black cotton that has faded to a greenish-black color. The chest is quilted and padded and there is an inside breast pocket. The sleeves are lined with white muslin and show some wear at the armpit. The tails each have a single pocket lined with polished cotton. All pocket linings are whole.

Attached at the shoulders is a pair of Captain of Infantry shoulder straps. These have a single border of thick bullion thread with an inner and outer jaceron border of dead bullion and a rank field of blue wool with two bullion bars on each end denoting a Captain’s rank. Both have discolored with age and have some light wear and surface dirt. The strap on the left shoulder has more wear than its companion in that it is actually showing some of the underpinning where the bullion thread has worn away.

The buttons on the coat are all three piece MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA buttons with the raised arm and sword surrounded by stars. All back marks do not match. All have even wear and look to be original to the coat although some may have been re-sewn.

This coat is pictured on page 120 of “STARTING YOUR FIRST CIVIL WAR COLLECTION” by Frank Mroczka.
