These wartime straps were once high-grade quality pieces but they have accumulated a lot of wear over the years.
The triple border is made of bullion thread that has darkened with age. The border is outlined with both an inner and outer jaceron border of dead bullion. The knap has worn off the rank field to the point that branch color is difficult to discern. A close look reveals some dark blue/black threads which leads one to believe that these straps once belonged to a Major on staff. The Major’s oak leaves are done in a thick bullion thread that has also darkened to black.
The underside of the straps is covered with a dark blue cloth that has been attached by hand sewing. This material looks like a broadcloth of the type found on Civil War officer’s frock coats.
Despite the hard wear these straps are still an attractive pair.
