The body of the epaulettes are gray and outlined with a plain brass border. Each epaulette has a “clamshell” outlined with heavy black cord with an interior border of twisted white cord. Squared end of epaulette has a Virginia state seal button.

The undersides are lined with brown polished cotton. The square end of each has a long thin tab made of doubled up iron. The fringes suspended from the “clamshell” area are gold twisted cloth.

The condition of these epaulettes is complete but very dirty and worn. The tops of each have moth pin-pricks while one has a section of missing cloth where the body meets the “clamshell” that meas. approx. 2.00 inches long by 1.50 wide. Each has some dark discoloration while the undersides of both have moderate dirt and some stress separations. The Virginia buttons have a dark patina on each. One has a heavy push in the area of the face.

This matching pair of epaulettes comes from the Rosensteel family collection of Gettysburg artifacts.
