VERY FINE CONDITION UNION CORPORAL OF ARTILLERY SHELL JACKET

$2,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-155

Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front with two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. Buttons are a mixture of plain backs and “SCOVILLE” backmarks. Corresponding buttonholes show light wear but are otherwise good.

The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are light signs of wear with light surface dirt but no moth action of any kind can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color but do show some scattered loose threads. All exterior seams are tight except for right sleeve at shoulder which has some minor separations. Collar has no hook and eye closure. Each sleeve has a pair of red Corporal’s chevrons of ribbed tape on a black backing. Chevrons are in excellent condition with minor edge wear and were tack stitched in place at some undetermined time.

Interior is lined with a brown wool material and has a vertical pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. The top section of the left sleeve seam is loose while the bottom has been reattached. Right upper sleeve interior is stamped with “L. G. STEPHENSON / U. S. INSP. / CINITI. O.” There are also some other random markings that are blurred and unreadable. Left sleeve has no markings. The center back of the lining is stamped with a long line of lettering that due to smudging and possible over stamping is now unreadable. Above this lettering is the number “22” while below it is the number “39.”

Overall the jacket is a first rate example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket.   [ad]
