VERY NICE MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY OVERCOAT

$3,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-162

This item is in museum quality condition with very little moth action evident, with tight seams and mostly clean exterior.

This infantry pattern overcoat is made of sky-blue kersey wool with a dark blue wool lining in the body. The exterior has all the characteristics of the infantry pattern overcoat. The high collar, elbow length cape and single-breasted front. The wool material is in excellent condition. There are some moth bites and worn areas scattered here and there but overall they are minor. There is some scattered surface dirt that is consistent with age and use. The front of the collar at the throat still has the two original hook & eye fasteners. One eye has broken loose but is present attached to the hook. The cape has six hand sewn buttonholes and six cuff sized Massachusetts Volunteer Militia buttons with “EXTRA QUALITY” backmarks.  All the buttons have the same patina and thread and look to be original to the coat.

The front of the body has five Massachusetts Volunteer Militia coat sized buttons. Most have “EXTRA QUALITY” back marks while one is “SCOVILLE WATERBURY.” All look to be original to the coat. The five buttonholes on the front are all hand done.

The material at each cuff is folded over approx. 3.25 inches. The back center of the coat has two half belt sections that pass through a loop and are anchored by one Massachusetts Volunteer Militia coat sized button.

The body of the interior is lined with a dark blue wool material that shows light wear. The sleeves are lined from cuff to armpit with white muslin. The seams where the body lining meets the sleeve lining are still closed tight. The left sleeve is marked with a maker’s name in black ink “JOHN MARTIN / NEW YORK.” Stamping is light but readable.

John Martin of New York City had many contracts for uniforms during the war including infantry greatcoats.

This is a first class item worthy of even the most advanced Civil War collection.
