PAIR OF 1st LIEUTENANT OF INFANTRY SHOULDER BOARDS ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH BARTLETT OF THE 81ST NEW YORK

This pair of shoulder straps have a single, thick embroidered border made of bright bullion which has tarnished with age. There is also an inner and outer jaceron border of dead bullion. The center rank field is of a royal blue cloth. Each of the straps has a single bullion bar at opposite ends of the rank field denoting a 1st Lieutenant.

The dark blue wool undersides are folded and sewn.

Straps are in very nice condition however. One has a strip of clear tape along the bottom edge. The other strap also has a taped label to the bottom that reads “1st OR 2nd LIEUT.?”

Each strap measures 4 ¼ " long x 1 ½ " wide.

With the item is a Xerox copy of the war history of Joseph Bartlett. It reads;

“Bartlett, Joseph-Age 21 years. Enrolled at Rome, to serve three years, and mustered in as a Private, Co. I, (81st New York Infantry) October 6, 1861; promoted Corporal February 21, 1862; Sergeant September 23, 1863; reenlisted as a veteran January 1, 1864; wounded in action, June 3, 1864, at Cold Harbor, Va.; mustered in as First Lieutenant, Co. F, January 4, 1865; as Captain Co. A, August 11, 1865; mustered out with company, August 31, 1865, at Fort Monroe, Va.”

He was born in New York State in 1841 and died there on March 28, 1881. He is buried in Pioneer Burying Ground, Pittsford, New York.
