Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front with two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. Buttons all have plain backs. Corresponding button holes show light wear but are otherwise good.
The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are no signs of wear or dirt and no moth action of any kind can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color but do show some scattered loose threads. All exterior seams are tight except for left sleeve at shoulder which has about a 4” separation. Collar has one hook and eye closure which has been reinforced with modern thread.
Interior is lined with a tan wool material and has a pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with an unreadable inspector’s mark. There are also some other random markings in each sleeve that are blacked out and unreadable.
Overall the jacket is a very good example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [jet]
