1850’S MILITIA TAILCOAT

$1,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 801-577

Coat is made of a cadet gray wool material with a high collar and a nine button front.

Then exterior of the coat is in excellent condition. The material is clean with no visible signs of moth action. The left hip, where the tail meets the coat body, has a small modern repair done in white thread.

Collar is approx. 2.25 inches high and made of black wool with a gray wool lining. Collar is held closed by a single hook and eye at its base. White cloth label is sewn into collar interior but it is much worn and no markings are visible.

Running down the front are nine, three-piece staff officer’s buttons. (Tice GS226A22) All have the same back mark of “WATERBURY BUTTON CO. EXTRA.” All are original to the coat. Each button is flanked by two parallel rows of black tape that is hand sewn to the coat. With each button the tape extends further across the chest. For example, at the top button the tape extends 4.00 inches on each side. At the 4th button it reaches its zenith of 6.00 inches and then decreases as it moves to the bottom button. The tape is in good condition and is only missing very minor amounts where the button rubs on it when the coat is closed.

There is a small horizontal watch pocket on the left side at the height of the fourth coat button.

The cuffs on the billowed sleeves are non-functioning and have rectangles of black wool with one scalloped edge. Each cuff had three buttons which are now gone. The same rectangles appear on the back at the top center of each tail. Tails have edging of black wool on the outside and inside edge which meets at a point on the bottom of the tail. There are no tail pockets and no buttons.

Interior body lining is in excellent condition. Lining is made of a cotton material that has turned to a light green over the years. It is quilted in the chest with a tighter quilting pattern under the armpits. There is a horizontal pocket in the left breast. Lower center of back has a 6.00 inch long vertical repair that is poorly done. Lining looks to be hand sewn into the coat. Sleeve linings are white muslin and in good condition. Only discolored by age. Interior of the tails is lined with a fine black wool.

Overall this pre-Civil War militia tailcoat is in excellent shape. Missing buttons on the cuffs and back can easily be replaced.  [ad]
