Straps are for a Captain of infantry and have the usual Smith patent false embroidered stamped brass border and rank devices. The sky blue wool of the rank field has faded slightly on both. One shows some small amounts of mothing while the other is missing almost half of the wool.
What makes these straps special is that each one bears a paper label attached to the bottom. One of the labels is partially gone but the other is totally intact and reads “JAS. S. SMITH / PATENT / JUNE 18, 1861 / 15 DUTCH STREET / NEW YORK.” This is the first set we have seen with such a label. Smith patent boards are usually unmarked or have the patent information stenciled on the bottom. [ad]
