Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front (one is reproduction and several of the original buttons have been resewn) with two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. Most of the buttons have Scoville back marks. Corresponding button holes show little wear.
The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are no signs of wear or dirt and no moth action of any kind can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color with no loose stitching. All exterior seams are tight. Collar has one hook and eye closure which has been reinforced with modern thread.
Interior is lined with a tan wool material and has a pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with size, “4” and a nice oval inspector’s mark.
This jacket is a great example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [jet]
