A close examination of the exterior shows the dark blue wool is in overall good condition. There are several small holes scattered in the neck and shoulder area and there are also one or two on each sleeve, but overall the coat is solid. All the seams are good except for the underarms. Each underarm has a burst seam that needs repaired. These are not visible when sleeves are in a relaxed position. The red piping shows light surface wear throughout and there is light to moderate surface dirt over the entire coat.

The nine button front has seven eagle “A” buttons while two are just plain General Service eagle buttons. These front buttons have some light wear to the cloth behind them caused by use. Machine sewn buttonholes also show wear from use. Japanned hook and eye is present at throat. Each functioning cuff has two eagle “A” buttons and the back has two coat sized eagle “A” buttons as well. Each tail has an interior pocket of brown polished cotton.

Each sleeve has red Sergeant chevrons tack stitched in place. Stripes are made of red ribbed tape on a dark blue, almost black, background. Stripes have some spots of fading and surface dirt to match the coat but are complete and in nice condition.

Interior has a tired quilted lining in the chest. The right breast has a horizontal pocket with a tear in the lining next to it and an old repair above it. This right chest area also has a larger tear in the neck exposing some of the cotton batting underneath. The left chest has one or two stress separations with an old repair in the armpit and a hole off to one side. The back of the coat has no lining. Looking over the area where the chest linings meet the neck, the stitching was done by hand and looks of the period, but crude.

Both sleeves are lined with white muslin material that has browned a little from age. Left sleeve lining has what looks to be hints of a faded maker’s mark.

This is a scarce item and even though it shows signs of age and use it will display nicely.  [ad]
