The Infantry, Heavy Artillery and Engineers used this style of greatcoat. The foot style great coat is single breasted with a standing collar and has an elbow length cape. The coat is made of quality Sky Blue wool with a heavy brown cotton jean material body lining that extends to the waist. The lining in the sleeves is white cotton. The cuffs can be turned down and it has a split back seam. On the back is a two-piece belt that has two buttonholes and one button for waist adjustment. Unlike federal contracts, the bottom edge has been hemmed. It has a five-button front and a 6-button cape, one button on the belt in the back.
The coat buttons and the belt button are all matching period Rhode Island buttons. They are backmarked SCOVILL MFG. CO. / WATERBURY. All the smaller cape buttons are also matching period Rhode Island buttons and are marked SCOVILL MFG. CO. Inside the left pocket is stamped in orange ink is the letter 2. It also has the name SULLIVAN written in ink in the same sleeve. This is an excellent quality coat with very minor moth holes located throughout the coat.
