At top of the ribbon is a circular dark blue metal button with a brown canteen at center with the initials “US.” Around the canteen in white lettering are the words “WE DRANK FROM THE SAME CANTEEN.” The button face is in good condition but the reverse is somewhat rusted. The original pin remains. Suspended from the button is a blue ribbon that meas. approx. 2.00 inches wide x 4.25 inches long. Printed in faded but easily readable silver lettering on the ribbon is “46TH RE-UNION 12TH REGT. C.V. OLD HOMESTEAD-SAVIN ROCK JUNE 21, 1911.”

The 12th Connecticut was recruited in Hartford County and known as “THE CHARTER OAK REGIMENT.” It was raised in the fall of 1861 for three years service. The regiment was sent to Louisiana where it saw action at Bayou La Fourche, Georgia Landing, Bayou Teche, Pattersonville, Bethel Place, Bisland, Port Hudson, Brasher City and Donaldsonville. The regiment then moved to Virginia with the 19th Corps and saw action at Summit Point, Monocacy, Charlestown, Winchester and Cedar Creek. In November of 1864 the regiment reenlisted as a Battalion. They were mustered out August 12, 1865. During its service the regiment lost 73 men killed and died of wounds, 229 wounded, 144 captured and 180 died of disease.
