The top bar of this ribbon is stamped white metal that has darkened some with age. Across the face of the bar is stamped “G. A. R.” with a scalloped decoration at each end. Bar also has a beaded border and the original pin on the back.

The black ribbon meas. approx. 2.50 inches wide x 8.00 inches long. The top has a printed silver border with a decoration of wings with an urn at center. The bar reads “HONOR THE DEAD.” Below this in silver is “IN MEMORIUM.”

Printed on the body of the badge is a large GAR membership badge with a silver eagle and star with a full color cloth US flag. Across the bottom in silver lettering is “G. L. WILLARD POST NO. 34 TROY N.Y.” Below this is another bar of silver ink with four five-pointed star decorations. At the very bottom is a row of silver bullion tassels.

The overall condition of the badge is excellent.

George L. Willard was born in New York City and served in the Regular Army in the Mexican War rising to Sergeant in the 15th US Infantry. After the war he was given a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th US Infantry. By the time the Civil War began Willard was a Major in the 19th US.  Willard became Colonel of the 125th New York and was captured with his regiment at Harper’s Ferry in 1862. After being exchanged the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac and were engaged at Gettysburg where Willard was killed on July 2nd by a shell that hit him in the face.
