Orange ribbon that meas. approx. 2.25 inches wide x 8.25 inches long with black lettering.

There is no top bar as the ribbon was meant to be anchored by a straight pin. The top half of the ribbon has a spread-winged eagle on a US shield with sunburst between his wings. Below this is lettering that reads “29^TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEPARTURE OF THE 125^TH REG’T N. Y. VOL’S. FOR THE SEAT OF WAR OF THE REBELLION.” Below this a printed bust view of Colonel George L. Willard. The bottom of the ribbon reads “HELD AT AVERILL PARK, SCHAGHTICOKE, N. Y. AUGUST 27, 1891.” The very bottom reads “24 BATTLES.”

Ribbon is clean with bright colors and shows only light wear.

The 125th N. Y. was raised in Rensselaer County, New York and was mustered in for three years’ service in August of 1862. The regiment was sent to Harper’s Ferry where it was captured during on September 15, 1862 during the Antietam Campaign. The regiment was paroled and sent to Chicago for duty at Camp Douglas where they remained until they were declared exchanged. The 125th returned to the eastern theater of war and was assigned to the 22nd Corps for a short time before being assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 2nd Corps in June of 1863.

The regiment was engaged at Gettysburg where their Colonel, George L. Willard was killed along with 26 other men and a 104 wounded. The regiment was also engaged at Bristoe Station where it fought valiantly. The actions of the regiment at Gettysburg and Bristoe helped dispel the name “The Harpers Ferry Cowards” which the regiment bore since their surrender at that place in 1862.

In March of 1864 the 125th was transferred to the 1st Division of the 2nd Corps and fought with that organization through Grant’s Overland Campaign being involved in all the large actions and skirmishes from the Wilderness to Appomattox.

The regiment was mustered out at Alexandria, Va. on June 5, 1865 having lost 16 officers killed, died of wounds or by disease and 224 men not to mention the number wounded but recovered.
