The top of this badge has a round disc with a photo on celluloid of Connecticut’s war-time Governor William A. Buckingham. The reverse of the badge has the original pin and maker’s label. Suspended from this top disk is a red, white and blue ribbon that meas. approx. 1.50 inches wide x 3.00 inches long. Printed in silver lettering on the face of the badge is “42ND REUNION 12TH REGT. CONN. VOLS-NORWICH JULY 13, 1907.” At bottom of the ribbon is a double sided disc with a photo on celluloid of a large house surrounded by the lettering “BUCKINGHAM MEMORIAL GAR” the reverse has another photo of Buckingham identical to the one at top. Ribbon is in good condition but dirty from age and storage.

The 12th Connecticut was recruited in Hartford County and known as “THE CHARTER OAK REGIMENT.” It was raised in the fall of 1861 for three years service. The regiment was sent to Louisiana where it saw action at Bayou La Fourche, Georgia Landing, Bayou Teche, Pattersonville, Bethel Place, Bisland, Port Hudson, Brasher City and Donaldsonville. The regiment then moved to Virginia with the 19th Corps and saw action at Summit Point, Monocacy, Charlestown, Winchester and Cedar Creek. In November of 1864 the regiment reenlisted as a Battalion. They were mustered out August 12, 1865. During its service the regiment lost 73 men killed and died of wounds, 229 wounded, 144 captured and 180 died of disease.
