Ribbon is white with blue printing. Ribbon meas. approx. 2.50 x 8.50 inches. At center is a portrait of a dog resting its head on its front paws. Lettering reads “THIRTY-FIRST ANNUAL REUNION OF THE FIFTH REGIMENT, CONN. VOLUNTEERS. MIDDLETOWN, AUGUST 9TH, 1897.”

Ribbon has two horizontal fold lines and a pin at top but is otherwise excellent. Very clean for a white ribbon of this age.

The 5th Connecticut Infantry was organized in Hartford on July 26, 1861. They served in the Shenandoah Valley until the creation of Pope’s Army of Virginia when it was assigned to that army’s 2nd Corps. The regiment saw action at Cedar Mountain, 2nd Bull Run and Chantilly after which it was placed in the Army of the Potomac’s 12th Corps.

The 5th fought at Chancellorsville and on Culp’s Hill at Gettysburg after which it was transferred with its Corps to the western theater and in April of 1864 became part of the 20th Corps. It saw further action at Resaca, Dallas, Marietta, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Sherman’s March and Bentonville.

During its service the regiment lost 193 officers and men killed, died of wounds and disease not to mention numerous others wounded.  [ad]
