1889 GETTYSBURG RIBBON FOR THE PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER RESERVE CORPS

$95.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1054-428

At the beginning of the war Pennsylvania exceeded its federal quota for volunteers, but the state retained the men in service and created a Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corps of 15 regiments organized into division of three brigades who took the field and saw a great deal of action in the war. As part of the 5th Corps at Gettysburg the division was in action particularly on July 2 on the Union left in the area of Little Round Top, the “Valley of Death,” and the Wheatfield.

This age-yellowed white silk ribbon is suspended from a nicely stamped top bar and reads in blue lettering, “Pennsylvania” in an arc over “Reserves,” with the blue Maltese cross of the third division of the Fifth Corps, with the letters “PVRC” in white on the arms of the cross. Below the cross, again in blue, is “GETTYSBURG, Sept. 11, 1889.”

There is some horizontal shredding to the top section of the ribbon, affecting the word “Pennsylvania” and some color transfer of both blue and red from other ribbons that must have been stored it in a damp environment. The bullion fringe at bottom is in place. There are a couple of minute, short separation lines just above the edge of the bullion fringe.  [sr]
