Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1054-422

A very good condition medium blue ribbon with a floral impressed brass top bar and bullion fringe with text in white and a celluloid photographic button showing Col. J.W. Fisher in a wartime view wearing his field officer’s frock and shoulder straps. There are some minor losses to the white ink, but the text is plain, “Tenth Reunion / of the / 5th Reg’t. P.R.V.C. Jersey Shore, Pa., May 12, 1897.

Fisher enlisted in the regiment as a captain on 5/15/61 at age 46 and was promoted to Lt. Colonel in June 1861, and to Colonel in August 1862 after the death of Col. Simmons. He commanded the regiment until its muster out in June 1864 and then served as Colonel of the 195th PA Vols from July to November 1864, and again from March 1865 to March 1866. He received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General on 11/4/65 for “faithful and meritorious service during the war.”

At the beginning of the war Pennsylvania exceeded its federal quota for volunteers, but the state retained the men in service and created a Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corps of 15 regiments organized into division of three brigades who took the field and saw a great deal of action in the war. The 5th Pennsylvania Reserves were also designated the 34th Pennsylvania Infantry in the state’s sequence of line regiments. The unit served from June 1861 to June 1864, seeing most of its action while in the 5th and 1st Army Corps, and was engaged with losses at such battles as Malvern Hill, Gaines Mill, New Market Crossroads, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Spottsylvania, losing 14 officers and 127 men killed or mortally wounded, plus dozens of wounded men who recovered.

The ribbon is in very good condition and the officer honored had a good service record.  [sr]
