An excellent condition badge for a representative to the annual encampment of the G.A.R. Department of Pennsylvania held at Gettysburg in 1913. The bronze upper bar reads “Gettysburg” in a scroll at top, over the G.A.R. emblem of soldier and sailor shaking hands before the figure of Columbia with grateful woman and child bordered by the words “Grand Army of the Republic Veteran 1861-1866.” A red ribbon hold the bottom bar reading “representative,” from which hangs a planchet with the portrait bust of a bearded man in civilian clothes captioned “Thomas H. Cole Commander” on the obverse. The reverse reads “47th Annual encampment Dept. of Penna. G.A.R. Gettysburg June 1913,” surrounded by a wreath.
Cole had been a member of the G.A.R. since 1867 and had served in the 4th U.S. Light Artillery. Having moved to Erie, Pa., he became active in Pennsylvania G.A.R. activities and served several terms as commander of Strong Vincent Post 67. [sr]
