Item Code: 503-22

White porcelain canteen almost the same size as a regulation canteen. Item meas. approx. 9.00 inches from the tip of the spout to the bottom edge and approx. 8.50 inches across. The spout, spout collar and the three sling keepers are all outlined in gold paint. The spout has remains of its cork stopper. The very center of the canteen has a depiction of the medal of the Union Veterans Union. The top device is crossed sabers with a gold painted 5-pointed star at center. Below this is a strip of red, yellow and blue paint to represent the ribbon while the bottom has the medal device with crossed rifles, shield and organization name. The above decoration is raised and was cast with the canteen. Across the top, below the spout but above the medal, is “Edward A. Norton” and around the edge of the canteen is “Co. L. 1st Reg. Md. Cavalry.” This lettering is in gold paint and is in good condition. The backside is blank. The overall condition is excellent. Item is clean and exhibits only light wear from age and storage.

There were two men named Norton in the 1st Maryland Cavalry Co.L. They were Leonard A. and Robert H. Since the middle initial “A” on the canteen matches Leonard’s middle initial it is possible that Leonard also went by Edward for some reason. Either way there is no doubt to the authenticity of this wonderful item.  [ad]
