Medal consists of two pieces. The top bar and a circular drop.

The top bar consists of the intertwined letters “WV” below a riband that reads “HONORABLY DISCHARGED.” Reverse has the original pin.

The circular drop has an obverse scene of Columbia crowning a soldier with a crown of laurel flanked by a shock of wheat and a perched eagle. At bottom is the state Coat of Arms flanked by the dates “1861-1865.”

Reverse of the drop has “PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA” within a laurel wreath.

Edge of the drop is engraved with “CHAS. HUBBS SERGT. CO. E 11TH REG. INF. VOLS.”

Medal comes in its original white box with Hubbs name, rank and regiment written in period pencil on the lid and his last name and regiment in period ink on the side.

Also suspended from the top bar and running the length behind the medal is a very nice condition red, white and blue ribbon.

Charles Hubbs enlisted as a sergeant in Company E, 11th West Virginia Infantry on May 1, 1862. Unfortunately, that is all the information given in the Adjutant General’s records. Hie daughter did receive a pension in 1887 and his wife a widow’s pension in 1889.   [AD] [ph:m/l]
