Superb early GAR kepi mounted with a post-war veteran’s Second Corps / First Division badge. Also present are the numbers “67” in a false embroidered stamping mounted at the forefront of the cap. These numbers might represent the owner’s original wartime regiment or the GAR post number to which he had belonged. The profile of this cap (height at front, 2¾” tapering up to about 4” at the rear, including the 1½” lower band and a 5” diameter crown; visor measures 1 ¾” in depth; head size, 7 3/8”) suggests it might have been manufactured near the beginning period of the GAR’S organization. Internal features of this cap are of a brown polished cotton lining along with the complete 1¼” (scored pattern) leather sweatband. The manufacturer’s name and location (HORSTMANN BROS. & Co. MILITARY FURNISHERS, PHILADELPIA) are still visible stamped into the sweat band.
Over All Condition: The outer body of this cap has some very minor moth hole issues, located above the numbers at front and one small hole located on the right side panel at the mid-section area. On the reverse side of the visor, it has partially been reattached to the cap body with a widely stitched light blue thread. The brown polished cotton lining, while still complete, has come unstitched from the crown and hangs loose.
This early Kepi with its corps badge certainly would be a highlight item to add to your GAR collection.
