This is a two piece medal. Cast upper bar is made up of the letters “GAR” with the word “WASHINGTON” on a riband superimposed on the letters. Each letter of “GAR” is filled in with different color enamel, red, white and blue respectively. The white enamel of the letter “A” is chipped a bit near the top while the blue of the “R” is mostly gone. The reverse of this top bar still has the original pin.

Suspended from this top bar is large drop that consists of a spread-winged eagle over crossed cannons at top while at center is a rendition of the US Capitol surrounded by a riband that reads “36TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT OCT. 6-10 1902.”At the base of the drop is a bust of George Washington surrounded by stars at the center of a GAR star. The image of the capitol is flanked by two medallions one has a soldier at center while the other has a sailor.

The reverse of the drop has the maker’s mark.
