The top section of this three-piece badge consists of a spread-winged eagle at the intersection of four US flags with a riband at bottom that reads “19 BOSTON 04.” The reverse of this top section still has the original pin.
Suspended from the upper section by one chain link on each end are the letters “GAR.” At one time these letters where filed with red, white and blue enamel. Now only the white of the “A” remains. The red and blue has chipped off the other letters.
Suspended from the center section is a drop made of a five-armed version of a Maltese cross. At center of the cross is a tin disc with the Massachusetts state seal. Around this disc is a riband with “38TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT G. A. R.” Each arm of the cross has a different view of the city of Boston on it. One has the steeple of the Old North Church while the other four are not familiar but no doubt figure in the history of Boston and the country. The reverse of the drop has a GAR star at center surrounded by the different branch insignia.
