This 5 ¼” x 2” printed was for the admission of one member of the GAR to a “RECEPTION AND CAMP FIRE” to be held at the American Academy of Music, “IN HONOR OF / COMRADE U.S. GRANT / BY THE / GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, / OF PHILADELPHIA” on “Thursday Evening, December 18th, 1879”.

This event was one of many held around this date in Philadelphia upon General Grant’s return from lengthy world tour (May 1877 – September 1879); a large parade supposedly featuring 40,000 participants and seen by 350,000 spectators kicked off the celebration on December 16th.

The ticket, printed on heavy paper, is in good condition.  Light age yellowing throughout, two minor smudges at upper left.  Stamp at right reads, “CORTLAND SAUNADERS POST NO. 21, PENNA”.  Handwritten on the reverse in period ink by two different people, “Geo D Letch [?] / Courtland Saunders / Post 21”.
