MARYLAND 1892 GAR BADGE

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 801-66

This badge was worn by Maryland veterans at the GAR reunion in Washington in 1892.

Gold colored silk ribbon with black lettering, has “WASHINGTON” printed at the top. Below this is the botonee cross, which is the Crossland family’s coat of arms, and was the symbol used by Confederate Marylanders. Beneath this is the Calvert coat of arms, which was adapted by the pro-Union Marylanders. Both symbols were later used for the Maryland state flag, as a sign of the reunification after the Civil War.

Ribbon is in excellent shape with no fraying and some slight surface dirt. The back of the ribbon is stamped “SISCO BROS., 50 N. CHARLES ST., BALTIMORE”.

Copper-colored stamped brass bar at top says “MARYLAND”.  Pin attached on the back will fasten. The drop is a copper-colored brass bar that reads “G.A.R. 1892”, with a diamondback terrapin attached. The bottom left leg of the terrapin is missing. The diamondback terrapin is the official Maryland state reptile that is found in the Chesapeake Bay.

Measures 5 inches long.
