Two piece GAR medal with a rectangular top bar that reads “MEMBER.” Reverse has original pin.
Suspended by two single links of chain on each end is a circular drop that shows an old veteran in civilian clothes holding a US flag superimposed over a laurel branch. The top of the drop has “ROCHESTER, N. Y.” in very small letters with the date “1889” to the right of the figure. At bottom is “STANDARD BEARER ASSOCIATION.” Reverse of drop has a maker’s mark.
Medal comes mounted on a 3.25 x 6.00 inch card that reads “THE ANNUAL TRANSFER OF THE FLAGS FROM THE OLD STANDARD BEARERS TO THE NEW WAS A CUSTOM ESTABLISHED IN ROCHESTER BY THE GEORGE H. THOMAS POST, NO. 4, GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, OF WHICH CAPTAIN HENRY LOMB WAS A MEMBER. TO COMMEMORATE THE MEMORY OF HIM AND TO ASSIST IN A MEASURE TO MAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL CEREMONY MORE EFFECTIVE, CARL F. LOMB PRESENTS THIS MEDAL OF HONOR TO YOU AS ONE OF ROCHESTER’S FLAG BEARERS.”
Henry Lomb was a 1st Sergeant in the 13th New York and rose to the rank of Captain. He served from 1st Bull Run to Chancellorsville when he was mustered out on May 12, 1863. He is the “LOMB” of the famous optical company BAUSCH & LOMB.”
