The top bar features a likeness of the stone monument that commemorates the burning of Chambersburg, PA. in 1864 flanked by the date “JUNE 1896” while across the bottom is “CHAMBERSBURG” in a riband. The reverse has the original pin.

Suspended from the top bar is a solid red ribbon approx. 1.50 inches long. Ribbon is in very good condition.

Hanging from the ribbon is a circular drop with the bust of a bearded man at center surrounded by “DEPARTMENT COMMANDER 1895.” The reverse has the soldier’s memorial monument in the center surrounded by “DELEGATE TO 30TH ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT DEPT. OF PENNA.” and “SOLDIERS MEMORIAL” over “G.A.R.”

The Department Commander pictured at center on the obverse side of the drop is Oberlin College graduate Henry Harrison Cummings who at age 22 was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company D, 105th Ohio Infantry. He served with his regiment through the war being promoted Captain on February 18, 1864.

The regiment saw service at Perryville, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta and Jonesboro just to name a few. Captain Cummings was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on June 3, 1865. After the war he lived in Tidioute, Pennsylvania.  [ad]
