The Union Veterans Union was formed in Washington, D.C. in 1886 to fill a need that many Civil War veterans felt was lacking. There was no question that the Grand Army of the Republic was the strongest of all the Union Veterans organization. But many felt they had become an "elitist" group, losing touch with some of the real concerns of the typical Union Veterans. It was also felt that the G.A.R. was too loose in allowing membership to those men who had never served in combat.

M.A. Dillon, a Union veteran, was concerned that many veterans did not have a voice. He was also concerned with the treatment of the nation's Black Veterans. Dillon, who had organized several G.A.R. posts, turned his organizational and leadership skills into establishing the Union Veterans Union in 1886. Only those Veterans who had been in combat could join.

This small lapel pin has their “UVU” star and 1861-1865 dates, with red, white and blue panels around the edge. Good condition.  [jet]
