G.A.R. ASSISTANT ADJUTANT GENERAL’S BADGE

Item Code: 30-2220

This three-piece G.A.R. officer’s badge features a miniature shoulder strap at top, a middle bar engraved “ASSt. ADJ. GENERAL,” and a planchet with border cartouches showing floral elements of a wreath and a central raised badge of the G.A.R. showing its seal and motto in red, white and blue enamel. These are suspended against a red, white, and blue ribbon.

As the largest and most influential Union veterans’ association, the G.A.R. does not need an introduction to collectors. The shoulder strap at top indicates the wearer’s current office. If the false embroidered insignia at either end of the strap looks like it is meant to imitate a double bar, but if it is an elaborate single bar, he might be a Post Adjutant, which would make sense from the middle bar that, by position, indicates he had been an Assistant Adjutant General. The use of “general” would seem to imply a national office and perhaps indicates a concurrent office, though the ribbon is not the conventional US flag with red border to indicate a department office or buff border to indicate a national one.

The badge is in excellent condition, with bright color, ribbon and pin clasp intact, and displays very well.  [sr]
