Item Code: 172-2370

Top bar has Pennsylvania Coat of Arms at center and flanked by laurel branches. Pin on back. Light blue silk ribbon is suspended from the bar. The ribbon is split at bottom so the medal that was suspended from it is loose. Ribbon shows some discoloration and has written on it in faded gold “51ST P.V.V.”  Medal is 9th Corps Badge with red, white and blue alternating stripes on field behind cannon and anchor. Medal is in very nice condition and can be reattached to the ribbon by someone with sewing experience.

The 51st Pennsylvania was led by future General and Governor John Hartranft. It was the 51st Pennsylvania, along with the 51st New York, who finally captured Burnside’s Bridge at Antietam. They served under Burnside in his Carolina Campaign and were with the 9th Corps from its creation onward.
