Medal consists of a white ribbon with a red stripe on each end. Attached to the ribbon is a leaf and plant shaped drop with three plants above three wide leaves. The reverse of the drop has Japanese lettering at center. With the medal is a small lapel button.
The medal comes in a small box that when closed meas. approx. 3.50 inches long x 2.25 inches wide x 0.75 if an inch. The box appears to be made of tortoise shell with a small brass flip-up latch on one end. There is some Japanese writing on the lid. The inside of the box is padded and lined with purple silk. The bottom has a cutout to receive the ribbon and medal.
All items are in good condition. The hinged box shows only light wear.
The medal is the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun 8th Class. The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in the following fields; international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
This order was established on 10 April 1875 as a general order of merit to both civilians and military. This order is awarded depending on rank, and this being the lowest grade, it would have been awarded to privates or low civil servants.
