GERMAN KURLAND CAMPAIGN CUFFBAND

$800.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 476-68

Rare original campaign award for Wehrmacht defenders of the isolated Kurland pocket. The Soviet offensive in January 1945 cut off German Army Group North from the rest of the German forces defending Latvia. Renamed "Army Group Kurland" on 25 January, the Army Group remained isolated until the end of the war. The Russians made repeated attempts to destroy the German defenders isolated in the pocket; all proved unsuccessful and cost the Red Army very high casualties. When the Germans were ordered to surrender on 8 May, they were in "blackout" and did not get the official order before 10 May - two days after the capitulation of Germany. Army Group Kurland was the last German organized force to surrender in Europe. The Kurland cuffband was therefore the last German campaign honor manufactured and awarded during World War II.
