Tunic is made of forest green wool with a high stand up collar, four patch pockets, epaulettes on each shoulder and pointed cuffs.

The exterior of the jacket is in very good condition. There are no signs of any moth activity anywhere on the body or sleeves. Four of the five buttons down the front are present with the fifth one loose but in the right front lower pocket. The two breast pockets are pleated and have both their buttons. The two lower pockets are plain and both buttons are missing. Present on the high collar are the correct eagle, globe and anchor collar discs. They are a matching pair with forward facing anchors. Just above the left pocket is a World War One Victory ribbon with one campaign star.  On the left upper sleeve is a red felt diamond with a black silhouette of the Marine Corps insignia with a white “V” embroidered at center. This insignia is for the 5th Marine Brigade. The lower left sleeve has two gold bullion overseas stripes representing a year in France. Present on each shoulder is an epaulette and button.  Present in the right breast pocket is a “MARKSMAN” bar with the original pin.

The interior has a green cotton lining in the body and darker green cotton in the sleeves. The body lining has a vertical pocket on each side towards the front of the tunic. The interior shows some light wear but is in excellent shape. There are no visible markings of any kind.

The 5th Marine Brigade consisted of the 11th and 13th Marines and the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. Elements of the Brigade arrived in France in September of 1918 with all of it being with the AEF by November 9, 1918. Upon arrival in France, the 5th Marine Brigade was assigned to the Service of Supply, which was in need of dependable troops for guard duty.  The 13th Regiment soon found itself scattered, and doing guard duty along with the western coast of France, while the 11th Regiment was stationed in the general area of Tours.  There it performed similar duties, such as guarding the aviation training center at Issoudun, and furnishing some companies for military police duty.  The brigade machine gun battalion was stationed at Camp Pontanezen, Brest.  The units of the 5th Marine Brigade continued to perform these general duties until July 1919, when they assembled at Brest and returned to the United States early in August.

World War One Marine items are rare and highly collectable. This uniform would fit well into any collection from that period.
