WORLD WAR ONE USMC BAND SHEET MUSIC BOX

Item Code: 344-2967

This rectangular wooden box has an outside measurement of approx. 17.75 inches long x 12.00 inches high x 6.25 inches wide.

The narrow side panels are dovetailed into the bottom board while the wider front and back panels are nailed in place. The top lid of the box is attached to the back panel by two iron hinges.

The front, bottom and sides have a base paint of a dark royal blue while the back and top lid are plain and have darkened with age.

The front panel is painted with a wonderful Marine Corps insignia of a black eagle, gold globe with white continent and a gray anchor. In the eagle’s beak is a white riband with a red border the reads “SEMPER FIDELIS” in yellow. The eagle is mostly a filled in silhouette with little detail and the wording in the riband is very faded.

Above the riband and just below the top edge of the box is “MARINE BAND” done in yellow capital letters approx. 0.75 on an inch high. Along the bottom edge, beneath the eagle globe and anchor is “BAND MUSIC” also done in yellow capital letters approx. 1.25 inches high. Lastly, painted across the face is “AEF” for American Expeditionary Force. The letters “A” & “F” are done in gold and flank the globe. The letter “E” is at center of the globe and is painted red. These letters are 3.00 inches in height.

The overall condition of the wood is good. There are numerous small chips and some light to moderate wear to the paint especially at the bottom. There is also a good bit of surface dirt. The edges of the box were outlined with a thin brass that is mostly present with some sections missing.  There are two horizontal cracks running through the words “BAND MUSIC” with another minor crease running across the face at the height of the globe and in the area of the riband. The head of the eagle has been obliterated by the shadow of the now missing hasp that once held the box closed. The lid has lost approx. 0.50 inch of wood causing the lid to be a bit short. All sides of the box are made of single pieces of wood with the exception of the back panel which was made of two pieces. The wood has shrunk leaving an open seam at the back. Hinges are missing two screws.

There does not appear to be any evidence that THE Marine Corps Band known as “The President’s Own” went to France in World War One. This box was most likely used by one of the regimental or brigade bands that did go to France with the AEF.
