Item Code: 873-17

This is a relic German Army I machine which is a composite of original parts from several Enigma relic machines recovered from Europe. The base has the serial number 10904. This machine is not functional and has none of the electronic parts or wires. It is only for display. Most of the original parts were damaged by either the German Army during WW2 or the corrosion from being buried.

The repairs consisted of either soldering, rivets, or epoxy. The components that are original are the keyboard, base, lamp board, battery box, ratchet mechanism, rotor support towers, and rotor thumb wheels with one rotor core serial number A17288. The Keyboard key shafts are all original, but the key pads are from an antique typewriter. The base is bent and some modification on the ratchet tower for the ratchet bar to fit. The lamp board is stacked above the original switch board which is missing all the switches except for one. The battery box has fiberglass repair at the base. The rotor reflector housing is original, but the inside is a wooden blank. All the rotors have a dummy numeral ring. Two rotors have wooden blanks for the core and ratchet wheel. The third rotor has an original core A17288.

The lid is original on top riveted to a sheet metal pattern for strength. The components attached to the lid are all original, except the power knob which is an exact replica and the bulb guide underneath the original cellulose repainted alphabet sheet. The lid is not attached to the hinge since it cannot fit over the rotor's thumb wheel due to the base being bent. Non original parts consist of the patch board, side walls, springs, most screws, some of the support columns, and power board (in front of battery box.)

The enigma machine was used by the Germans during WW2 to code their messages and the Germans thought the code to be unbreakable. The Poles initially and later the British at Bletchley Park broke the code which is estimated to have shorten WW2 by 2 years. These machines are rare and an original functioning Enigma Machine at auction commands prices above $150,000.   [ad]
