These identity books were carried by the policeman and give details of his training, his place of assignment, medical, personal and pay information as well as clothing and equipment issued. Each book comes with a photograph of the policeman attached to the inside front cover.

Book meas. approx. 4.25 x 5.75 inches with 40 pre-printed pages some of which are filled in with ink. Several pages also bear the government’s eagle and swastika stamp. Cover is a mustard color paper with tape binding. Printed on the front is “SS SOLDBUCH” and in smaller print “ZUGLEICH PERSONALAUSWEIS” or “SS Pay Book and Identity Card.”

The information recorded in this particular book is for a German policeman named Karl Gotting who was born on February 28, 1892. Gotting was called to duty from his home in Hamburg on January 2, 1945. In March, during the final days of the Reich, he was issued his clothing, equipment and a 98K rifle. The picture in the front of the book shows Gotting wearing a black wound badge and ribbons for the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Hindenberg Honor Cross, awards he received in World War One.

The book has sparse entries with the last one dated May 5, 1945. This is due to the declining conditions within the Reich at the end of the war.

It should be noted that the Police operated under the auspices of the SS and that is why those letters appear on the cover of the Soldbuch. Gotting was NOT a member of the SS.  [ad]
