COLLECTION OF 80 8X10 COMBAT PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE FIGHT FOR SAIPAN IN 1944

$500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 954-23

All of these original combat photographs have been obtained from the historic archives of William Randolph Hearst’s’ San Francisco Examiner newspaper.

All are WW2 stamped and dated. Many have the actual newspaper article they illustrated attached. Some photos show signs of editor’s notes, crop marks and doctoring for dramatic effect. The latter is minor and best illustrated by one photo where a soldier was added to a scene when he did not appear in the original shot.

Most of the images relate to fighting on Saipan in 1944. Several photos show intense sea action such as the sky over an aircraft carrier filled with anti-aircraft fire, smoking ships, landing craft filled with troops and flag draped bodies ready for burial at sea. Numerous photographs show battle damage such as knocked out crew served weapons, tanks, abandoned small arms and many shots of Japanese dead.

Some wounded and dead Americans are also shown as are Japanese POWs and civilians.

All images have captions and are in excellent condition. All images come mounted in page protectors in a three ring binder.

A great collection of interesting images of a hard fought Pacific battle.  [ad]
