These identity books were carried by the soldier and give details of his training, his unit assignments, medical, personal and pay information as well as clothing and equipment issued. Each book comes with a photograph of the soldier attached to the inside front cover.

Book meas. approx. 4.25 x 5.75 inches with 24 pre-printed pages many of which are filled in with ink. Several pages also bear the government’s eagle and swastika stamp. Cover is a mustard color paper with tape binding. Printed on the front is a black Army eagle and swastika with “SOLDBUCH” and in smaller print “ZUGLEICH PERSONALAUSWEIS” or “Pay Book and Identity Card.”

The information recorded in this particular book is for a German soldier named Herbert Tinzmann who was born on October 22, 1913 and was from Breslau. He was a vehicle driver with the rank of Obergefreiter and served with the 38th Infantry Regiment in Russia. He was hospitalized for a gunshot wound in April of 1945 and was still in the hospital when the war ended.

Included with the book is a separate document printed in English which states that Tinzmann was discharged on January 15, 1946. It also notes battle scars and that he had chronic hip arthritis. Paper is signed by Tinzmann and bears his thumbprint. Document was processed by an officer in the US 4th Armored Division.  [ad]
