WORLD WAR TWO ERA US FLAG ON A BLACK SCARF - PERHAPS A MOURNING DECORATION

$50.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 668-88

Black polished cotton scarf meas. approx. 36.00 x 36.00 inches. Scarf is in excellent condition with just the usual fold lines. Sewn at center is a silk 48-star US flag. The flag is attached to the scarf by using blue thread in an “x” pattern. This type of stitching is often encountered on World War Two uniforms. Flag is in very good condition.

Around the edge of the scarf is a border made up of three parallel rows of “x” stitching. One row each in red, white and blue.

The patriotic motif on the black background strongly suggests that this is a mourning item. It was not uncommon for a fallen soldier’s family to decorate their home in mourning up to a year after the soldier’s death. Of course the decorations often had a patriotic motif.  [ad]
