Original WW2 German medal of a Maltese cross with swastika at center over crossed swords. Reverse bears the date “1939” at center.
Attached to the medal is a ribbon with a black center stripe flanked by white and then red stripes.
Medal and ribbon are in excellent condition but the back of the ribbon has a piece of Velcro attached to it.
With the medal is the award document that is filled out for Gefreiten (Corporal) Gallmuller who served in the Headquarters Company of the 11th Jager Battalion. Document is dated April 20, 1943 and has a faint eagle and swastika stamp.
This award was created by Adolf Hitler in October 1939. The award was graded as follows: War Merit Cross Second Class, War Merit Cross First Class, and Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross. The award had two variants: with swords given to soldiers for exceptional service "not in direct connection with combat", and without swords given to civilians for meritorious service in "furtherance of the war effort".
The framed item meas. approx. 10.00 x 12.00. The medal is in its own clear plastic holder attached to the exterior of the frame so the reverse of the medal can be observed.
Gefreiter Gallmuller does not appear in a database of German war dead so it appears he survived the war but that is all that is known about him. [ad]
