Both of these booklets belonged to Georg Leonhard Fischer who was born in Sheffield, England on June 14, 1910 and returned to Germany in time for service in World War Two.

These comprehensive documents originated at initial recruitment to provide a detailed synopsis of a soldier’s military career, including assignments, discipline, awards promotions, combat and medical health. These records did not follow the soldier into the field but were kept and updated at a central records office.

The booklets include loose papers of significant importance such as a racial statement, police clearance, a list of combat actions and a photograph.

The Military record book or “Wehrstammbuch” shows no R.A.D. (labor) service but tells us Fischer was inducted into active military duty at Heilbronn on May 15, 1939 and assigned to the 34th Infantry Regiment. The record book also shows that he was trained with the K98 rifle and the MG34 machine gun. He was also trained as a radio operator and rose to the rank of Obergerfreiter.

Included with the military booklet are seven additional papers and a signed photograph of Fischer. The documents include Police clearances and a racial purity statement. There is also a typed list of his military actions to include - Preparedness on the Upper Rhine front, Operations on the Western Front, Securing the German western border, Transition over the Meuse, Breakthrough over the Albert Canal, Fighting in East Belgium and over the Albert Canal, Tank battle at Hannut-Gembloux, Breakthrough through the Dyle to the Charleroi Canal, Pursuit from the Dyle to the Charleroi Canal, Battles over Senette and Dendre, Battle of the Scheldt, Battles for Tournai, Fighting in West Flanders around Lille, Battle of Dunkirk, Battle for France, Advance through Belgium and France, Crossing the Seine and advancing to the Lorie, Securing the Denmark Line, Occupation duty in France, Occupation duty in Belgium

Also included in the military book is a duty card which is a brief summer of Fischer’s basic data and suited duties. Also attached is a military registry card glued to a linen strip forming an envelope in which other papers could be kept.

The health book or “Gesundheitbuch” includes five additional medical documents from 1937 to 1940.

Both the military and health booklets are only marginally filled out and were probably lost or separated from Fischer during his service.

His last military assignment is in Signal Detachment Replacement Battalion 5 at Bad Canstaat, Germany in 1944.
