The Lebel was a bolt action, magazine fed rifle that was also the first military arm to use smokeless powder and had a service life spanning both World Wars in the hands of several nations. The bayonet, nicknamed “Rosalie” by French soldiers, was an “epee” style, four sided, and designed strictly for thrusting and to penetrate thick clothing and gear. This particular example probably dates to the period of World War One, but maintains the early style long blade and hooked lower guard, that were phased out or modified in 1915. The blade is smooth metal, but dark. The guard and locking mechanism show some crustiness and light corrosion that obscure any markings. The grip has a dull silver matt finish, likely nickel silver, and is very good. [sr]
