The combination of the sun symbol joined by the strong lettering of the konji makes this flag both strong in meaning and also very artistically appealing. The beautifully inscribed statement in Japanese characters to the left reads "Army Major General Watanabe Wataru. Congratulations & celebration to Mr. Naito in joining the Army". 

These flags were typically given to soldiers and signed by friends and family to remember the good will of those he was fighting for. What makes this flag special is that is was presented by a Japanese Major General. It was unusual for such high ranking officers to sign these flags. The fact that it was signed by a general, and that the general referred to the soldier as "Mr" Naito, rather than using his first name, indicates that the recipient was someone of importance. General Watanabe held a variety of posts during the War, culminating in 1945 as Vice Chief of Staff Northern China Area Army. 

Flag measures 35" x 25". Has yellowed with age, and has scattered staining throughout. Framed and matted in a 43" x 35 1/2" frame.
